There are many people writing excellent articles about South American food, and I often come across great things that I can resist sharing - like this list of Brazilian desserts written by Lori Rice, an expat living in Brazil, for the blog 5 Star Foodie Culinary Adventures (which also has a beautiful post about Brazilian breakfast foods and exotic fruit). Lori's post has lots of photos of unusual desserts and a great recipe for Beijinhos, a tasty-looking candy/cookie made of brigadeiros (chocolate caramels) and coconut candy combined.
I have written a little about salchipapas and the hot dog condiments that are popular in Peru, but I was surprised to see this post about what people in Colombia enjoy on their hot dogs. According to the blog My Colombian Recipes, that would be pineapple sauce, coleslaw, ketchup, mayonnaise, mustard, and potato chips!! The pictures make it all look pretty darn good, and the recipe for the pineapple sauce sounds delicious.

If Colombians need to put all that stuff on their hot dogs, maybe the hot dogs themselves are not very good.
maybe not… but I think they’re the Colombian equivalent of a chili dogs or a Big Mac – they’re street food, junk food! The pineapple sauce might be good on ice cream…
maybe you guys shout shut up and actually TRY them before talking crap. they are delicious and the pineapple sauce makes them even more amazing. just cause they stuff the hotdogs doesn’t mean the actual hotdog isnt good you idiot.
I lived in Bogota Colombia for a year as an exchange student about 20 years ago. One thing I DO remember was that they had the best hot dogs ever! A shop called Los Perradas de Edgar had some amazing combinations from shrimp to pineapple. On every street corner were food stands that served everything from hard boiled eggs and coffee to hot dogs and hamburgers. The foot long hot dogs were my staple however. They were served with a 50-50 mixture of mayo and catsup, raw onions, pineapple, a little bit of honey and then crushed (lays) potato chips on top of the honey.. man were they addictive.. I’ve been making them ever since. I entertain parties alot and occasionaly serve colombian hot dogs as a variant to reg. hot dogs during BBQ’s. They are always a hit. Try it..
