Missing the Limes...

Monday July 13, 2009

The only key limes I ever see in the stores where I live are tiny and slightly shriveled. I know that looks can be deceiving - more tart juice comes out of those little limes than you would expect. But I miss the fatter, juicier, super acidic key limes that grow all over South America. They are a large part of what makes the famous pisco sour cocktail what it is, and are amazing in pies. The larger persian limes that are more common in US supermarkets are good, but they lack that special intense tartness.

I know it's best to eat locally, but I secretly remain hopeful that the global market will bring those limes to my local store someday.

My husband is Peruvian and I have come to love Pisco Sours and Ceviche. It wasn’t until our recent visit to Lima did I experience the lime’s of South America. The Pisco Sours were amazing and the Ceviche unbelivable ALL due to that tiny little lime … which I can’t get here in the US.

I have an update – I just bought some limes at Trader Joes that were very similar to the limes in South America (thinner skin, larger than a key lime, very juicy, and very tart). The package said they were organic limes from Mexico. They’re very good – and must be available other places as well…
