I just discovered how easy it is to make dulce de leche in the microwave. You simply mix the ingredients together and microwave them for 30 second intervals, stirring in between. I was doing various chores around the house while I was making the dulce de leche, so each time I walked past the microwave, I gave it a stir and zapped it for 30 seconds more. I probably did that about 20 times, and suddenly I had perfect caramel dulce de leche. The only trick is to use large glass or other microwave-proof bowl, because the dulce de leche can boil over if the bowl is too small.
