If you live near Washington, DC and are looking for something that's both fun and cultural to do this weekend, head straight for the the Folklife Festival on the National Mall. This is the second and last weekend of the festival (which continues through Monday, July 11), an annual event sponsored by the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage. The three themes for 2011 are Colombia, the Peace Corps, and Rhythm and Blues. Visit the festival website to learn more about the various exhibits and attractions, which include music and dance performances, cooking demonstrations, artisanal crafts, and even a lesson in Afro-Colombian hair braiding. The Smithsonian Festival blog has interesting Colombian recipes from the cooking demonstrations.
