In Peru the month of October is known as el Mes Morado, or the purple month, in honor of el Seņor de los Milagros (lord of miracles). You can read the fascinating story behind this celebration here at LivinginPeru.
It's traditional to eat the anise flavored candy/cake known as turron de doņa pepa during the Purple Month. Boxes of commercially prepared turrones are available in the stores, but homemade turron is much, much better. It's kind of fun to make, like building a lincoln log house.
